A Brief History of the Harley

In 1901 William S. Harley and his friend, Arthur Davidson, spent hours laboring in a machine shop at the home of a mutual friend, trying to build a powerful motor bicycle that would allow them to conquer Milwaukee’s hills with no pedal assistance.

Harley, who would go on to get a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was 21 in 1901, when he drew plans for a small engine to power the bike.
