A Brief History of the Harley
In 1901 William S. Harley and his friend, Arthur Davidson, spent hours laboring in a machine shop at the home of a mutual friend, trying to build a powerful motor bicycle that would allow them to conquer Milwaukee’s hills with no pedal assistance.
Harley, who would go on to get a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was 21 in 1901, when he drew plans for a small engine to power the bike. Although it didn’t work on that first try, the young me didn’t give up and without hesitation went to work on a new engine.
This engine powered what was to become known as the first real Harley Davidson motorcycle. The official founding date of the company is considered to be 1903, not 1901.
